Dog Breeds On Vintage Cigarette Cards (Collectibles)

Dog Cigarette Cards

Dogs have been man's best friend for many years, perhaps 17000 or more and this enduring relationship was reflected on cigarette card issues from the late 19th century through to the start of WWII. It would be impractical to list every dog cigarette card set issued and so I've made a small selection from the more rare and unusual card sets that I've come across in my six years of trading on eBay. I've provided colour scans of a sample card from each set and tried to list all the dog breed names.

This set of trading cards features the Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration which is, or has been, awarded for valour "in the face of the enemy" to members of the armed forces of various Commonwealth countries, and previous British Empire territories.

The Iron Cross was a military decoration of the Kingdom of Prussia, and later of Germany, which was established by King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia and first awarded on 10 March 1813 in Breslau. This card set features many silent film icons, such as Ramon Novarro, Rudolph Valentino’s rival to the "Latin Lover" crown. Two of the original Western film stars, Tom Mix and Hoot Gibson, are also paid tribute to on these photographic treasures. Gloria Swanson, who was as equally well known for her wardrobe as her acting prowess, makes an appearance on card no. 13. Femme fatale, Pola Negri boasted affairs with Charlie Chaplin and Rudolph Valentino. Cute kid, Jackie Coogan was plucked from obscurity by Charlie Chaplin. Leatrice Joy enjoyed an enviable career during the silent era but was one of many victims of the advent of sound, perhaps due to her unfashionable heavy southern accent. Mae Busch managed to secure appearances in many Laurel and Hardy movies.

Romantic encounters have always been an important element in movies since the beginning of the industry, as is evident from this card set of “Love Scenes in Famous Films”, issued by J. Wix and Sons in 1932. Many of the movie stars featured in this set were at their peak during the Silent Era. Dolores Costello was known as the “Goddess of the Silent Screen”. John Gilbert was very successful at playing the leading male roles in many films prior to the advent of the “talkies”, but his career plummeted dramatically afterwards. Some say that it was because he had a high pitched voice, while others cite a feud between him and his film producer, Louis B. Mayer.

Al Jolson’s film debut was in “The Jazz Singer” (1927), which was also the first feature film with synchronized dialogue. Its release heralded the commercial rise of the "talkies" and the decline of the silent film era. Janet Gaynor, featured on card no. 21, became the first winner of the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1929. Unlike many of her contemporaries, she continued her career despite the arrival of sound. Greta Garbo, regarded by many as one of the greatest movie stars ever, thrived in both the Silent and Golden Eras. A young Joan Crawford appears in a love trance with John Gilbert on card no. 4. Carroll Nye, featured on card no. 22, is best known for his role as Frank Kennedy, Scarlett O’Hara’s second husband, in Gone With The Wind. Fashion icon Anna May Wong, who appears next to Jameson Thomas on card no. 23, was the first Chinese American to become an international star.

J Wix and Sons, Love Scenes From Famous Films (Large), 1932 (25 cards)

    Navy Cigarette Cards (Collectibles) 1900s-1930s

    Navy Cigarette Cards

Cigarette cards were issued during a turbulent time in the history of mankind, 1870s-1930s. They documented two of the most destructive wars, WWI and WWII. These days, a country's power is determined by its possession of nuclear warheads. At the beginning of the 20th century naval capacity was considered to be an important indication of military might.

Many cigarette card sets were issued on naval related topics, from the days of press-gangs and pirates through to WW2 warships, aircraft carriers and submarines. I've listed a small selection of navy cigarette cards. I've provided scans of a sample card from each set and I've tried to list as many card titles as possible.

Prior to television and in the aftermath of the Great Depression, this card set on “Things To Make” would have come in handy for birthday gift ideas and a great way to pass the time. It includes instructions on how to construct a Royal Mail van and post box, miniature Punch and Judy show, paper aeroplane with a safety pin attached to the end to improve its flight, and furniture for a doll’s house. Many British households didn’t have telephones till well into the second half of the 20th century but one of these mid 1930’s cards reveals how to make a pair of toy ones out of tin cans and a string.

Greyhound racing is a relatively new sport and was introduced into the UK in 1926 by Charles Munn. A handful of sets were issued on this topic and they vividly bring to life the early days of this modern sport.

Morris issued a set of 1930’s racing greyhounds, stating their owners’ winnings on the reverse of the cards. The illustrations were printed using the photogravure technique and it looks as though a gloss varnish was applied, giving them an almost photographic appearance.

History Of Association Football (Soccer) On Cigarette Cards (Collectables)

    Association Football

The rules of modern association football were established in the 1860s in the public schools of England. Prominent soccer players and teams were vividly portrayed on cigarette cards from the late 19th century through to just before WWII. Association football's popularity snowballed throughout the world and demand for early soccer memorabilia is increasing rapidly. It would be impractical to list every soccer set issued and so I've listed a selection of the more unusual and rare soccer card sets that I've come across in my six years of trading on eBay. I've provided colour scans of a sample card from each set and where possible, I've tried to include the names of players and their respective football teams.

Paul McCartney is the only remaining original member of The Beatles. Musicians often find it difficult to repeat their initial success once they split from their band. Paul McCartney more than proved himself when he started another group from scratch, Wings, and scored numerous hits on both sides of the Atlantic.

1960's Cactus Trading Cards by F Lamberts and Sons 1962

The cactus is one of my favourite types of plant. This is either because I’m too lazy to water my house plants or perhaps because I like to think that I share similar characteristics: strength, endurance and uniqueness, but it is more likely the former. You can create some really strange shaped cacti by grafting several widely different forms together. Not many card issues were devoted to the cacti plant family, but the card series featured in this blog is one of those gems.

F Lamberts and Sons, Cacti, 1962 (25 cards)

Includes:Echinocereus Pentalophus, Lobivia Pentlandii, Hamatocactus Setispinus, Rathbunia Alamosensis, Chamaecereus Silvestrii, Cleistocactus Beaumannii, Coryphantha Bumamma, Malacocarpus Mammulosos, Opuntia Phaeacantha, Hickenia Microsperma, Homalocephala Texensis, Echinocereus Coccineaus, Dolichothele Longimamma, Nopalea Dejecta, Astrophytum Asterias, Opuntia Engelmannii, Carnegiea Gigantea, Echinopsis Multiplex, Echinocereus Pulchellus, Opuntia Lindheimeri, Heliocereus Speciosus, Echinofossulo Cactus Crispatus, Escobaria Tuberculosa, Opuntia Bergeriana, Selenicereus Grandiflorus

David Brown was one of the biggest manufacturers of tractors in post-war Britain. It’s difficult to see the link between the saucy lady featured on these cards and farm machinery, but obviously Brown believed it would help promote their products.

Includes:3 photos of a very seductive 1950's lady sitting on a timber trunk (maybe a phallic symbol).

World Warriors Cavalry Huns "Red Indians" Cossacks Trading Cards by Liebig, 1903

The horse was still a common mode of transport in 1903, but its days were numbered, along with the horse riding warriors depicted on these attractive cards. The Native Americans’ (“Red Indians”) independence had largely vanished by the time these cards were issued. The western cultural juggernaut either absorbed or destroyed minority cultures as it spread throughout the world. One group that still remains defiant even today, are the Arabs, although they don’t use horses so much. They have learnt to evolve and adapt their military strategies over the years, becoming masters of guerrilla warfare, much of which they have learnt from their western rivals.

As war clouds loomed ever closer this set was issued to provide civilians with helpful information on building a bomb shelter , protecting windows from blasts and dealing with incendiary bombs. A large part of the set is devoted to gas masks but, luckily, there were no gas attacks on Britain during WW2. Many of the cards provide reassurances on how the home front would be protected, featuring anti-aircraft guns, searchlights, balloon barrages, air defence control rooms and fighter planes.

Tobacco card issuers knew way back in the 1880s that sex sells and that’s why pretty girls and actresses adorn many early tobacco cards. In the USA and England, these cards of the fairer sex stopped short of nudity but card issuers in South America and North Africa were more daring. The movie world started out as a novelty pastime for inventors and amateur enthusiasts in the late nineteenth century but snowballed into a huge global industry in the 1920s and 1930s.

The card set featured in this blog is about as close as you get to pornography for the masses in the 1930s. It includes several cards of the film star Anne Grey with what looks like a see-through top on, Anna May Wong, the first Chinese American movie star, Sidney Fox, whose life ended tragically with an overdose, Ann Dvorak, whose prolific movie career secured her a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and many other movie stars in seductive poses.

Science Cigarette Cards (First Computer, Wright Brothers, Television, Cinema, Robbots)

    Science Cigarette Cards

Cigarette cards were issued during one of the most exciting times in history, 1870s-1930s. These encyclopaedic cards captured the Precambrian explosion in 20th century inventions and discoveries that propelled us into our modern age.

I've included a small selection of science related cigarette card sets below. For those interested in the history of the computer, the card set "Modern Wonders", issued in 1938 by Churchman, includes cards on "The Super Calculating Machine" and the "Slot Machine Which Plays Bridge". I particularly like the predictions made in "The World of Tomorrow, issued in 1936 by Stephen Mitchell.
